SOPF Workshop

Transboundary Oil Spill Liability & Compensation Workshop – Ottawa, Ontario

The Ship-source Oil Pollution Fund (SOPF) hosted a three-day Transboundary Liability and Compensation Workshop November 15th, 16th, and 17th in Ottawa, Ontario. The workshop aimed to facilitate a collaborative discussion on strategies for mitigating issues of liability and compensation in the event of a transboundary oil spill. Representatives from the US Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund, the US Coast Guard, Canadian Coast Guard, the International Group of P&Is, the International Oil Pollution Compensation Funds and the International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation (ITOPF) were given the opportunity to collaborate and share lessons learned and their experiences. The workshop was successful in the facilitation of discussions on the issues of liability of claims. Going forward, a working paper is being developed to encapsulate the valuable discussions that were held and to prepare the groundwork for further collaboration.
