Limits of Liability and Compensation Per Incident for Oil Tanker Spills in Canada

Figure 1 shows the limits of liability and compensation available under the 1992 CLC and the 1992 IOPC Fund Convention. The Supplementary Fund provides $1,026,899,510 billion beyond the amount available under the CLC and IOPC Funds.

The aggregate amount available under the 1992 CLC, the 1992 IOPC Fund and the Supplementary Fund is $1.408 billion. The SOPF amount of $174,611 million, on top of the International Conventions, results in approximately $1.583 billion being available for a tanker spill in Canadian domestic waters, including the territorial sea and the exclusive economic zone.
